SmartPlug can help! As summer temperatures rise, it’s important to keep your RV “cool” and protected from overheating. This can be a challenge, especially if you’re relying on outdated shore power systems. But with SmartPlug technology, you’re better equipped for safe RV adventures. Our RV products are specially designed to keep your vehicle safe from overheating, while also providing a more secure and efficient connection to the power source. Here are some of the top features that make SmartPlug a must-have for any RV owner: Improved Electrical Capacity: Unlike traditional twist-type RV plugs that can easily become loose from the campground outlet and cause overheating, our products utilize a multi-point locking system to ensure a secure and reliable connection. This increased electrical capacity helps to reduce corrosion which damages both your connector and the AC inlet. Over time, this damage makes your RV susceptible to an electrical fire. Weather Resistant Design: Our products are designed to withstand any weather condition, from extreme heat to heavy rain. With a robust design using materials that can withstand harsh UV rays and saltwater exposure, SmartPlug technology is built to last. All external metals are highly polished Marine-Grade 316 Stainless Steel, the electrical pins are nickel-plated brass for maximum conductivity, and plastics are UV and heat-resistant resins made right here in the USA. In addition, the internal electrics are fully encased in thermal epoxy making them 100% weatherproof. Easy to Install: SmartPlug products are easy to install and can be retrofitted to any recreational vehicle. With no special tools required, upgrading to SmartPlug technology is a simple process that can be done in just a few minutes. Our website offers you an extensive list of installation instructions you can reference as you get to know our products. Our team is available to assist should you have additional questions. Enhanced Safety Features: Our products come equipped with built-in safety features that help provide maximum protection for your RV. The “Features” page reviews how SmartPlug revolutionizes shore power delivery. One area SmartPlug shines is the fact the electrical pins push straight in which increases the electrical contact, deterring movement of the plug within the inlet. Another area is the addition of the LED two-color reverse polarity and power lights on the 30A and 50A RV cordsets; both in 30ft lengths. This important safety feature protects owners and RVs against improperly wired campground power pedestals and conforms with 2020 NFPA 70® Standard 551.40(D). In summary, the summer heat can be brutal, especially in the southern states currently experiencing temperatures in the 100’s! The last thing RV owners want to battle this time of year is an accidental RV fire that can be prevented by implementing SmartPlug technology to their rig. The Dangers of Using Outdated Shore Power Systems
The Dangers of Using Outdated Shore Power Systems SmartPlug June 27, 2023 5:30 am However, not all shore power systems are created equal, and some can be dangerous if they are outdated. Case in point: twist-type plugs. Shore power systems are essential for boats and recreational vehicles that require electrical power while docked. These systems provide a means of connecting the vessel to a source of electricity, allowing boaters and RVers to power their appliances, lighting, and other electrical systems. However, not all shore power systems are created equal, and some can be dangerous if they are outdated. Case in point: twist-type plugs. One of the main dangers of using twist-type plugs is that they do not have a locking mechanism. This means that the plug can easily become disconnected from the power source, which can lead to power outages and equipment damage. Furthermore, these plugs lack weatherproofing, which means that they are susceptible to damage from water and other environmental factors. Outdated Shore Power Systems Could Lead to Accidental Fires But it’s not just the inconvenience of power outages and equipment damage that you should be worried about, outdated shore power systems can also lead to accidental fires. Corrosion and overheating are two factors that can lead to electrical fires when using outdated shore power systems. Corrosion can occur when the shore power cord is not properly weatherproofed, allowing water and other environmental factors to damage the cord and create a potential fire hazard. Overheating can occur when the shore power cord is not properly rated for the load it is carrying, which can cause the cord to become hot and create a fire hazard. Why You Should Use SmartPlug Instead At SmartPlug, we’ve developed a range of features that work to prevent these dangers and provide a safer shore power connection. One of these features is our patented locking mechanism, which eliminates the problem of accidental disconnection, reducing the risk of electrical fires caused by power outages. Additionally, our products are weatherproof, preventing corrosion and protecting against water damage. They’ve been tested and certified to meet or exceed industry standards, ensuring that they are properly rated for the load they are carrying which reduces the risk of overheating. SmartPlug also offers circuit breaker protection, which protects your shore power system from overloading and potential fires. Furthermore, our products have built-in safety features that detect power surges and electrical shorts and automatically shut off the power, preventing electrical fires. In short, while shore power systems are essential for boats and RVs, it is important to choose a system that is safe and secure. Outdated shore power systems like twist-type plugs can be dangerous and lack the necessary safety features to protect your vessel and its electrical systems from power outages, equipment damage, and accidental fires caused by factors like corrosion and overheating. SmartPlug offers a range of shore power products that are designed to meet the needs of boaters, RVers, and marina operators. With features that work to prevent these dangers and ensure the safety of your shore power connection, SmartPlug is a smart investment.

Living in areas prone to hurricanes means preparing for the worst. And if you’re a boat owner, this preparation should include steps to keep your boat safe. Hurricanes can cause severe damage to boats if they are not properly secured or removed from the water. In this article, we’ll provide you with some essential tips for keeping your boat safe during a hurricane. But first, let’s take a look at what we can expect for the 2023 hurricane season. What to Expect According to the latest predictions from Colorado State University, the 2023 Atlantic hurricane season is expected to be “slightly below average,” with 13 named storms and two major hurricanes making landfall. While this may seem like good news, it’s important to note that even a below-average season can still result in significant impacts from hurricanes. Therefore, be prepared and take proactive measures now to ensure the safety of your family, home, and property such as your boats and RVs.
How to Keep Your Boat Safe During a Hurricane
How to Keep Your Boat Safe During a Hurricane SmartPlug August 12, 2022 6:00 am If you’re a boat owner, it’s important to take the necessary precautions to keep your boat safe during a hurricane. If you’re a boat owner, it’s important to take the necessary precautions to keep your boat safe during a hurricane. Hurricanes can cause extensive damage, and if your boat isn’t properly secured, it could be swept away or damaged by the storm. In this blog post, we’ll discuss some tips on keeping your boat safe during a hurricane. A hurricane has been named and is headed right for you. And though you have days to over a week before it makes landfall, it’s always best to be prepared for the worst. How to keep your boat safe during a hurricane? We map out the steps to take below. If you have the option to take your boat out of the water, do it. Smaller open boats and high-performance powerboats with low freeboard will typically be overcome by waves, spray, and rain, so it’s best to take them out of the water and have them stored on the trailer. Many marinas and yacht clubs will haul boats out of the water as a hurricane approaches, leaving only the bigger vessels to weather the storm. If left in the water, a boat lift where they will be above the anticipated storm surge is your safest bet, but not everyone has that option. If you can store your boat on a lift, strap it down to the lift with ratchet straps for the ultimate protection. Properly securing your boat is one of the most important things you can do to protect it against hurricane-force winds, rain, and storm surge. You should make sure that your boat is anchored securely and that all of the lines are in good condition. Cover all lines to prevent chafing and wrap all lines where lines feed through chocks with tape, rags, and rubber hoses or leather. Install fenders, fender boards, or tires to protect it from rubbing against the seawall, pilings, or other boats. If available to you, store your boat and trailer in a garage. If a garage is not an option, secure them to strong trees. Or, use concrete deadman anchors if trees are not an option. There are plenty of instructional videos available should you require more information on how to secure your boat. Charge batteries and double-check they can run automatic bilge pumps throughout the storm. As any boat owner knows, the boat’s batteries are essential for operating the boat. Without them, it will not be able to start or run any of its electrical systems. That’s why it’s so important to make sure that your boat’s batteries are fully charged and have a backup battery before a hurricane hits. During a hurricane, the high winds and heavy rains can lead to problems with the boat’s electrical system, including short circuits and power outages. If the boat’s batteries are not fully charged, they may not be able to handle the extra load and could become damaged. Having a backup battery will ensure that you still have power even if the primary battery fails. Remove and safely store loose items and anything that can blow off the deck of the boat such as life jackets, fishing gear, cushions, and chairs for example. Some items, such as chair pedestals, can be left in place, but you want to cover the open flange with two plastic zipper bags and secure them to the pedestal with electrical tape. Electrical tape stretches, sticks to itself, and will stay put in a moderate storm. As long as you stretch the tape tight on the bag and not the pedestal itself, you should be all set. Determine a course of action for the drain plugs. For all outboard motor boats, all drain plugs can be removed so that the boat doesn’t fill up with water. Or, you may opt to increase its weight by filling it with fresh water and leaving the plugs in place. It’s really a personal preference and what you feel is best to make it the most sturdy. However, do NOT do this with an inboard motor boat, as it will ruin the engine – opt to remove the drain plugs instead. Another important tip is to get your boat insured and understand what your policy covers. Your policy may have certain requirements you need to meet. It’s advised to inventory the contents of your boat because your boat insurance policy may require it anyway. Take pictures or videos as evidence should items be damaged or lost. The more information for your insurance agent, the better. Keep important information in a waterproof, floating lockbox to store copies of your insurance policy, boat registration, and anything else related to your boat such as a marina rental agreement. If you live in an area that is prone to hurricanes, create an evacuation plan which includes where you will go if forced to evacuate, how you will get there, and what you will do with your boat. Be cautious after the hurricane has passed. Looming potential dangers includeleaking fuel, exposed electrical lines (make sure the dockside power is off if there is any chance of a dangerous leaking current), sewage backups, missing dock boards, and so forth. There could be stray electrical current from submerged outlets and/or shore cords in the water, damaged vessel systems, etc. Do NOT enter the water until local authorities say it’s safe to do so. Taking these precautions can only help preserve your boat during a hurricane. Remember, you can never be too prepared for a hurricane. And, with over three months left in hurricane season 2022, there’s still time to ensure your boat is safe. Do you have further tips? Share them with us in the comments! Our goal here at SmartPlug is to keep your vessel safe and secure DAILY with our sophisticated shore power delivery systems. Contrary to popular belief, the #1 cause of shore power failure and fires

How To Prevent Electrical Boat Fires From Happening
How to Restore an Older Airstream: Complete Your Renovation with SmartPlug Technology SmartPlug May 11, 2023 6:00 am Outdated shore power plugs and inlets are prone to salt, corrosion, and moisture. All these factors can contribute to arcing, Outdated shore power plugs and inlets are prone to salt, corrosion, and moisture. All these factors can contribute to arcing, which damages the contacts and eventually leads to increased resistance and heat accumulation. This is especially important when you realize that the typical shore power cord relies on the combination of twist-lock plug blades and a locking-ring mechanism. This constant twisting motion predisposes the cord to excessive heating. But what about loose connections? It’s a factor some boat owners don’t give too much thought to. Yet, it’s a major cause of electrical boat fires. Why? Antiquated Technology: Oftentimes it’s difficult for boat owners to securely connect the cords due to the tedious, twist-lock design functionality. Having a plug that doesn’t plug straight typically doesn’t create a tight enough connection. Corrosion: Another contributing factor to electrical boat fires is corrosion. Sometimes shore power cords accidentally end up in the water or get sprayed by the salt water. You’re dealing with salt water and when it dries out you’re left with salt crystals which leads to corrosion in both the inlets and the outlets. Friction starts in the electrical circuit, and with it comes resistance. Resistance: The real danger occurs when these scenarios continue to happen over time. Increased resistance generates more and more heat. Left unchecked, the heat builds up until the outlet smolders and bursts into flames. These scenarios happen all the time, but they can be prevented. So, How Do You Prevent Electrical Boat Fires Before They Happen? As you’ve learned so far, you want all your connections clean and tight, making the resistance negligible and allowing for current to pass through easily. Unfortunately, it’s almost impossible to achieve this if you use an antiquated twist-lock shore power cord. This is why we recommend SmartPlug as THE shore power system for the boat’s AC inlet. Its foolproof design helps boat owners stay protected from the possibility of an electrical fire. SmartPlug addresses loose connections with our unique sleeve design and prevents corrosion with the use of waterproof seals — significantly decreasing the chances of a fire outbreak on your boat’s AC inlet and consequent wiring. Below, we share a few testimonials about how SmartPlug marine products are revolutionizing the shore power industry, keeping boaters safer than before. “By locking the shore-power cord securely, SmartPlug creates a much tighter connection between the shore power cord and the boat’s AC inlet. I hope these locking plugs will become the new standard for bringing AC electricity aboard recreational boats. It’s a solution that is long overdue.” – Bob Adriance, Technical Director at BoatUS Marine Insurance (Rtd) “It’s commonly known that the current “twist lock” method of shore power cords can result in a fire hazard if not properly maintained which impacts Underwriters’ profit/loss margin more than any other type of claim. The design and benefits of the Smart Plug show that the risk of fire is substantially reduced which is a huge win for Underwriters so offering a discount for its installation and use certainly benefit everyone.” – Sean Thompson, president of Dolphin Insurance Conclusion: If you’re serious about securing your boat against electrical fires consider upgrading to SmartPlug technology. Or, if you’re an insurance underwriter, tell your customers about SmartPlug! SIMPLE TO INSTALL ELCI DEVICE MAKES BOATING SAFER
SIMPLE TO INSTALL ELCI DEVICE MAKES BOATING SAFER SmartPlug April 12, 2023 6:00 am Avoiding a tragedy is simple with the addition of a SmartPlug ELCI (equipment leakage circuit interrupter). Stray AC current leaking into the water from faulty marina or boat wiring can be lethal if someone falls in from a dock or deck. Avoiding such a tragedy is simple with the addition of a SmartPlug ELCI (equipment leakage circuit interrupter). Similar to a residential ground fault circuit interrupter, it instantly trips the breaker if a problem is detected to stop all electrical flow. A two-piece system, the SmartPlug ELCI Kit is comprised of a sensor and a 30A or 50A Breaker. The combination meets ABYC E-11 standards for ground fault protection and shore power circuit interruption. Both units have a UV-resistant enclosure housed in SmartPlug’s uniquely-designed but standard-size stainless steel or white non-metallic inlet. Completely automatic upon power-up, the SmartPlug ELCI element is UL-943 listed, has power and fault status indicators, and test and reset buttons. The rocker switch breaker is UL-489 listed with a trip level of <30mA (27mA nominal) at a trip time of <100mS (60mS nominal).
