Upgrading Power Connection is a Simple 30- Minute Job
Upgrading Power Connection is a Simple 30- Minute Job SmartPlug May 17, 2021 6:15 am With milder temperatures approaching, many RVers are upgrading their motorhomes, buses, campers, and expedition vans. One simple 30-minute DIY project is replacing traditional-type AC power connectors with a state-of-the-art SmartPlug Combo Kit. Not only will the rig’s power be more efficient and reliable, but the RV will be far safer. Since it was invented 80 years ago, the twist-type power connector hasn’t changed much. It still relies on thin blades that corrode and easily bend, and an annoying “L” shape that must be aligned just right. The pioneering SmartPlug is different. It has a robust pin and clip design that delivers 27 times more metal-to-metal contact than its predecessor. This provides greater protection against high resistance, overheating, and arcing, some of the leading causes of failure. Plus, it pushes straight in and secures with dual side locks, instead of the old-fashioned ring that never seems to thread correctly. Installing a SmartPlug doesn’t require professional skills or power tools. Because it uses an industry-standard hole pattern, there’s no cutting or drilling involved. Beyond the specialized tools included in the Combo Kit, all that’s needed are a #2 Phillips screwdriver, wire cutters, pliers, utility knife, liquid soap, and paper towels. The SmartPlug Combo Kit uses the existing RV power cord, saving a lot of money. The old plug end is cut off and the SmartPlug installed. A video of the simple process is at bit.ly/InstallSmartPlug. The second step is faster than the first. It involves removing the inlet from the side of the RV and replacing it with the SmartPlug unit. To match the appearance of the rig, these are available in black, white, and grey polymer, and polished stainless steel. SmartPlug Combo Kits are available in 16, 30, 32, and 50 amps. Prices start at $104. SmartPlug Systems engineers and manufactures safe alternatives to traditional AC power connections. Its plugs, inlets, cordsets, sensors, and breakers are CE certified; its 30A and 50A inlets and connectors are ETL certified to UL standards and meet CSA requirements. SmartPlug Systems Signs Pac-West Marketing
SmartPlug Systems Signs Pac-West Marketing SmartPlug May 11, 2021 6:11 pm SmartPlug Systems has signed rep group Pac-West Marketing to represent its pioneering vessel- and shore-side power supply components throughout the western US and Canada marine markets. Tony Barber, company CEO, made the announcement. “We’re pleased to partner with Pac-West for representation in the west,” said Barber. “Jess Nelson and his colleagues have deep, longstanding relationships with their factories and customers, and they appreciate the safety aspect of products.” SmartPlug Systems has transformed how power is supplied to boats at dock. This reduces electrical arcing, resistance, and resultant overheating—elements that are common causes of power failures and fires. It manufactures both vessel and marina pedestal connection equipment. If you’re planning on working from the road, check out our tips to make the process a smooth one: Get Organized: Do you have a designated desk space where you can set up? In order to be productive, you’ll want to ensure you have an area dedicated to your work. You’ll need room to sit comfortably, set up your computer, and a place with bright lighting where distractions will be minimal. Before diving in, set yourself up for success and create a space to help you accomplish your tasks. Set Realistic Expectations: It’s important to be realistic of your bandwidth. If you will be on the road traveling, it’s likely you will be tired. On those days, be realistic and understand you won’t accomplish as much work as you’d like. 50 Amps of Power is Safer with SmartPlug
50 Amps of Power is Safer with SmartPlug SmartPlug November 5, 2021 5:59 am On an RV, 50 amps is enough power to run a microwave or A/C unit. It’s also more than enough power to melt the housing of a traditional twist-type marine shore power connector and inlet. The revolutionary SmartPlug cordset overcomes the inadequacies of this old technology to deliver a safer, simpler, and more secure 50A 125/250V electric supply. Unlike twist-type connectors with their thin corrosion-prone blades, the SmartPlug uses a robust pin and clip design that provides over 27 times the metal-to-metal contact. This lessens electrical resistance and reduces the potential for arcing and overheating. It is the safest shore power cordset on the market today. Anyone who has fumbled with orienting the L blade and trying to thread the collar of a twist-type connector in poor conditions knows what a headache it can be. The SmartPlug connector pushes straight in and fastens securely with a rugged four-point locking system. It’s also asymmetrical, so there are no alignment issues—plugging into shore power can be accomplished with one hand. The SmartPlug connector is built with a durable heat- and impact-resistant polymer. New for 2021 is a reverse polarity indicator light that is now standard on all cordsets. Integrated into the RV-side female end are two LED lights. When the blue light is on, power is flowing correctly. If there is an unsafe condition, the red lamp will glow. SmartPlug cords use Superflex cable. This provides flexibility and durability, and makes them easy to coil even in freezing weather. SmartPlug 50A cordsets are 30′ in length. Prices start at $498. Versions in 16A, 30A, and 32A configurations are also available. If the vehicle is not already equipped with a SmartPlug inlet, users can purchase an upgrade kit with an inlet and connector. The inlet is available in stainless steel, black, white, or gray to match any décor. Superior IP56-rated gaskets ensure a watertight seal. Contact SmartPlug Systems, 2500 Westlake Ave N., Ste. Coming Soon – Reverse Polarity Indicator Lights on all SmartPlug RV Cordsets
Coming Soon – Reverse Polarity Indicator Lights on all SmartPlug RV Cordsets SmartPlug March 23, 2021 5:00 am As of July 1, 2021, SmartPlug is implementing a reverse polarity feature in all RV Cordsets. This feature will include a series of light codes that will let the consumer know the condition of the power coming from the campsite power pedestal (see images below). Reverse polarity is a safety concern and can damage electrical components on the Coach or trailer. This unsafe condition exists when the power coming from the pedestal is improperly wired. The issue has become enough of a concern that the New 2020 NFPA 70 National Electrical Code introduced language in the RV STD Article 551 to include a new section 551.40(D). This addition requires a reverse polarity device on all new recreational vehicles (The complete definition can be found in the 2020 NFPA 70 Standard). Ensure that you always travel safe with SmartPlug! Not only are our cordsets weatherproof and easy to use, they will ensure your family can safely enjoy your next adventure! Learn more here.

Savvy boat and RV owners using the revolutionary SmartPlug shore power system will always be prepared for what they encounter at the dock with a set of 50A Pigtail Adapters. Available in four configurations, the devices ensure the electricity flows reliably and safely. Traditional twist-type AC shore power connectors have thin, fragile blades that easily corrode. They’re manufactured with tinned marine grade wire for years of corrosion-free hook-ups. All 50A Pigtail Adapters have a 50A female SmartPlug connector on the boat side.
